The first roundabouts in Henderson are open! The two roundabouts west of US 41 opened this past weekend. They’ll remain in a temporary configuration with a single lane of traffic until construction on the reconstructed KY 351/2nd Street interchange wraps up late this year.
- Both roundabouts west of US 41 are open to a single lane of traffic with drivers using the outside lane.
- KY 2084 and US 41 South can be accessed using roundabout movements.
- The ramps to and from US 41 have reopened to traffic and temporary traffic signals are no longer in use.
This single-lane configuration offers motorists an opportunity to adjust to driving the new roundabouts. Even in this temporary configuration, opening the roundabouts is expected to improve traffic flow along 2nd Street.
Ongoing construction includes curb and gutter work, truck apron concrete, installing a gateway sign for the City of Henderson, erecting flag poles, lighting, final surface and striping.
The third roundabout, closest to Henderson County High School, remains under construction and will not operate as a roundabout until later this year.
- The third roundabout is expected to open once the new ramps to and from US 41 North are complete and open to traffic.
- Until then, drivers will continue to use the existing on and off ramps to access US 41 and the existing US 41 North exit ramp will remain controlled with stop signs.
- One lane of traffic is open in each direction in the area.
A roundabout is an unsignalized one-way circular intersection that improves traffic flow, minimizes congestion, and increases safety.
They’re used to promote lower speeds and reduce conflict points, leading to safer conditions for motorists.
When using a roundabout, motorists should be sure to follow the key steps.
The new roundabouts at KY 351/2nd Street have been designed with the safety of students and other pedestrians in mind. The I-69 ORX project team coordinated with Henderson County school officials as the roundabouts were developed.
The pedestrian crossing of KY 351 near KY 2084 is no longer in place. Students will be directed to cross at the Klutey Park Plaza Drive pedestrian crossing. The “push to cross” button remains in place at Klutey Park and should be used by anyone crossing the street.
The crossing guard will have a presence at the KY 2084 roundabout for the first few weeks of school as students adjust to the new roundabouts and pedestrian patterns.
The crossing guards at Henderson County High School will remain in place.
New Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons (RRFBs) will be installed at all three pedestrian crossings. These systems help to alert drivers to the crossings and remind drivers to watch for pedestrians.
More information about roundabouts, including several directional videos to help you get where you’re going, can be found on the Roundabout Ready page on the project website.
