Section 1: Kentucky
I-69 ORX Section 1 is the approach work in Kentucky with improvements in Henderson extending from KY 425 to US 60.
KYTC is overseeing the project. I-69 ORX Section 1 will extend I-69 by more than six miles and includes interchanges with KY 351, US 41 near Kimsey Lane and at US 60.
Improvements include:
- 6+ mile extension of I-69
- 9 new bridges
- 7 rehabilitated bridges
- New US 60 interchange
- KY 351 interchange reconstructed
- New US 41 interchange
KYTC awarded a nearly $158 million contract to the Ragle, Inc./Stantec Consulting Services, Inc. design-build team in late 2021. Construction started in summer 2022.
New US 41 Interchange Construction Phases
When work on Section 1 of the I-69 Ohio River Crossing is complete in late 2025, the new US 41 interchange
will be in a long-term interim configuration. It won’t operate in its final configuration until after work on the
new I-69 bridge is complete. Phased construction of the US 41 interchange means a free flow of traffic for drivers
for the next several years. In its final configuration, US 41 will be an exit off I-69.
New US 60 Interchange
- The eastern roundabout will connect Tillman Bethel Road with US 60.
- Both lanes in either direction offer through access in the roundabouts. Follow signage and road markings to access desired turn lanes.
- Three roundabouts at the new US 60 interchange will facilitate moving traffic on and off I-69 and east and west along US 60.
- Two roundabouts to the west will work together to provide access on and off I-69 and carry traffic east and west along US 60.
New KY 351/2nd Street interchange
- The western roundabout connects drivers to North Middle School, KY 2084, and KY 351/2nd Street.
- Two roundabouts to the east work together to provide access off and on I-69 and connect KY 351/2nd Street and Zion Road.
- Both lanes in either direction offer through access in the roundabouts.
- Follow signage and road markings to access desired turn lanes.
New US 41 Overpass Bridges at KY 351
I-69 ORX Section 1 includes numerous roadway and bridge improvements. Nine new bridges are being built and seven bridges are being rehabilitated as part of the new I-69 in Henderson. New US 41 overpass bridges are being built at KY 351. The new bridges are being built at the same location, with the bridges remaining open to traffic throughout construction. Construction started in early June 2023 and is expected to be completed by summer 2025.
Improvements include:
- The new bridges are being built at the same location.
- They will remain open to traffic as the new bridges are built.
- This is possible through phased demolition and construction.
- The new bridges are being built in three phases.
- In phase one, crews built part of the future US 41 northbound bridge.
- Southbound traffic has shifted to the new lanes.
- In phase 2, crews are building the new southbound bridge.
- Traffic will move to the new southbound bridge.
- Crews will complete construction on the new northbound bridge.
